Clinicians undertaking perioperative CPET reporting should complete a standardized training programme before reporting independently. This involves gaining theoretical knowledge and practical competencies. The training suggested for POETTS accreditation was developed by consensus. See POETTS accreditation for details of the accreditation process.

POETTS accreditation involves:

  • Attending a POETTS accredited course.
    The syllabus for POETTS accredited courses must include the following:
    • Equipment, calibration, validation
    • The ramp protocol, test quality, choosing the appropriate work rate protocol, normal values
    • Exercise capacity - interpreting VO2 peak and anaerobic threshold
    • Anaerobic Threshold - physiology and methods of identifying the AT including uncertainty and inter-rater variability
    • Patterns of CPET abnormality in cardiac disease
    • Patterns of CPET abnormality in respiratory disease
    • How to report, what to report and communication of results
    • Communicating risk in perioperative patients
    • Practice interpreting clinical data
    • The evidence base supporting the use of CPET
    • Preoperative Exercise Training

2. Performing a minimum of 25 tests under supervision
3. Reporting a minimum of 50 tests under the supervision of a POETTS accredited mentor with a log book of tests
