CPET Exercise Testing
Pre-operative cardiopulmonary exercise testing is used to objectively measure physical fitness before major surgery. Fitness predicts post-operative complications and death. CPET can also be used to diagnose the cause of exercise limitation when fitness is impaired. CPET results are used in a number of ways:
- To contribute to pre-operative risk assessment
- To inform surgical consent
- To inform collaborative decision making, driving individualized patient centred care
- To inform pre-operative referrals and optimization in preparation for surgery
- To inform exercise interventions pre and post operatively
- To triage to appropriate perioperative care
