CPET Exercise Testing

Pre-operative cardiopulmonary exercise testing is used to objectively measure physical fitness before major surgery. Fitness predicts post-operative complications and death. CPET can also be used to diagnose the cause of exercise limitation when fitness is impaired. CPET results are used in a number of ways:

  • To contribute to pre-operative risk assessment
  • To inform surgical consent
  • To inform collaborative decision making, driving individualized patient centred care
  • To inform pre-operative referrals and optimization in preparation for surgery
  • To inform exercise interventions pre and post operatively
  • To triage to appropriate perioperative care
